Pass the Corn

Ahhh, no need to pass the corn. Look around you. It’s everywhere. “King Corn“, is a new documentary that shows just how full of corn our society really is.
I found it pretty ironic that mid-film I got a craving for some popcorn. I paused the doco, popped some little kernels, filled my “popcorn” bowl and sat back [...]

“Playnormous”

Playnormous is a great website full of interactive games that focus on nutritional and physical health topics. Best of all, they’re all free. Though I don’t agree with all of the content on the site (e.g. the “Nanoswarm” game brushes over nanotechnology like it’s an innocent miracle discovery– which is not the case– but that’s a discussion for another [...]

Eat the View!

This is so cool…

“Eat the View!” is a campaign to urge President-elect Obama to replant a large organic victory garden on the First Lawn with the produce going to the White House kitchen and to local food pantries.

Check out the website and sign the petition at the bottom right of the page. And then, take [...]

Agricultural Emissions

Consumption of meat has risen across the world. To deal with this increased pollution from animal farming, new “chores” on the farm are being created. Take this one for example:
1. Cook the pig poop.
2. Capture the methane.
3. Use the gas to make electricity.
Great idea, pretty gross though.
Consider this:

The trillions of farm animals around [...]

Good Meat for Thanksgiving

Perhaps everybody already has the Thanksgiving menu written down and shopped for. However, if you’re like me, this won’t happen until Wednesday night. Actually, when Charlie and I lived in California, we waited too long (Thursday morning…) and had to reconfigure our holiday plans. We decided to head to one of our favorite restaurants to [...]

Just Another Vitamin E & C Study

There’s been tons of media coverage on the latest Vitamin E & C study (called the Physicians’ Health Study II). Much of the media has reported that these vitamins have no benefits for cardiovascular health. Here’s what was really found:
Supplementation of 400 IU of Vitamin E every other day and 500 mg of Vitamin C [...]

CSI: McDonald’s

A recent study attempted to identify the nutrition and living conditions of “fast food animals” by analyzing the carbon and nitrogen isotope content in the meat. The study revealed that the meat used by McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King came from animals who were fed an excessive corn diet and were raised in extreme confinement.
I’m not [...]

Sleep Pretty in Pink?

Finally, the product we’ve all dreamed of… Or, I suppose, waited hopelessly awake for…
Cute little pink gelcaps made especially for those ladies who have trouble sleeping.  The commercial reminds us; “Find it in this cute little package that looks like a purse”. Yup, pink gelcaps tucked inside a purse-shaped pink cardboard box. In addition to the cheesy [...]

Chickens “Raised Without Antibiotics”

Apparently, Tyson Foods (the world’s largest meat “processor”) thinks injecting their chicken eggs with antibiotics still qualifies them as “raised without antibiotics”. Tyson claims this is accurate because the USDA doesn’t regulate labeling for the raising of chicks before the second day of life.
The Vice President of Tyson revealed, “The vast majority of the industry [...]

Living Chocolate

Yummm… chocolate is delicious. I like to read about chocolate, taste chocolate, smell chocolate- mmmmmm. There was a great story in the NY Times about a truly authentic chocolatier family:
César and Magdalena Dahua grow cacao, along with pineapples, vanilla, avocados, cassava, coffee, oranges and plantains. As they hack off the football-shaped fruit of the cacao trees, their [...]
