Yikes. What a mess our healthcare system is. Even Walgreens, the giant drug store chain, successfully deceived the system. Apparently, the retail giant raked in some extra profits, millions actually, by engaging in some Medicaid fraud. Neil Thompson, a Walgreens pharmacist ended up busting his employer. Here’s a bit from the story:
Late last month, the secret lawsuit that Thompson and pharmacist Dan Bieurance filed against Walgreens became public. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that the pharmacy giant would pay $9.9 million to settle the case. The company said it had changed its procedures to end the overbilling. For turning in their employer, Thompson and Bieurance stand to gain $483,000 each.
Thompson and Bieurance sure get a nice chunk of change for their whistle blowing. At least they busted the bad guy… click here to read the full article from the Star Tribune.

I’m sure this will come up in class on Thursday. Too bad we missed the opportunity to discuss it with the pharmacy professor.
Wow! I didn’t know Walgreens got in trouble for this! I’m gonna switch my prescriptions- unless all the other ones are doing the same??
Sheesh. This is so wrong! Good for Neil, of course it’s not too hard to blow a whistle when you stand to make 500,000.
